However, modern landfills have transitioned to combustion systems that burn methane in controlled conditions to generate heat or electricity.
  3. Electricity Generation: In more advanced systems, the heat produced by burning methane generates electricity through turbines or engines. This green electricity can then be fed into the grid, powering homes and businesses.

  1. Puente Hills Landfill, California: Once the largest landfill in the United States, Puente Hills Landfill closed in 2013 but continues to generate electricity from its decomposing waste, providing power to thousands of homes.
  2. Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya: In a unique initiative, a landfill at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya uses methane gas to power streetlights, improving safety and security for camp residents.
